Ringhotel Loew’s Merkur is one of the traditional Nuremberg hotels and family-owned since 1930.
Its History in Short
- 1930: Leonard Loew and his wife Anna open “Haus Loew” on Celtisplatz as a bed-and-breakfast with 7 bedrooms.
- 1938: Bed-and-breakfast expands to 44 rooms accommodating 86 beds.
- Café Merkur, on the first floor, is taken over. Pension Loew is renamed Hotel Merkur.
- 1945: Air attacks on Nuremberg in WWII destroy the hotel almost completely.
- 1946: Hotel reopens.
- 1948: Founder Leonhard Loew (1902-1948) dies. Operations are taken over by wife Anna and their 18-year-old son, Friedrich Wilhelm Loew.
- 1958: Premises are completely rebuilt at Celtisplatz 5. Hotel reopens with 5 floors
- 1963 -1967: Hotel expands through additional purchases and new constructions. With over 200 beds, Hotel Merkur becomes one of Nuremberg’s largest hotels.
- 1969: Friedrich W. Loew becomes General Manager.
- 1979: All rooms are renovated and modernized and now each includes bath and toilet.
- 1980: 50-year anniversary. Conference rooms and options are systematically expanded.
- 1982: Company founder, Anna Loew, dies.
- 1984: New complex opens with pool area, sauna, conference rooms and 32 new hotel rooms. Now 300 beds overall.
- 1991: Restaurant and lobby are modernized. More beds are added.
- 1992: Friedrich W. Loew is elected 2nd Vice President of the Bavarian Hotel and Restaurant Association.
- 1994: The “Europa Hall” is inaugurated. Loew’s Hotel Merkur becomes part of the Ringhotel Cooperation.
- 1995: Conference rooms and seminar options are expanded.
- 1998: Friedrich W. Loew is awarded the Federal Cross of Merit.
- 2000: He is re-elected 1st Vice President of the BHG.
- 2001: Hotel announces new internet homepage.
- 2003: Additional conference rooms (Albrecht Dürer Hall and Hans Sachs Room) are added, as well as handicap-friendly and barrier-free rooms. Hotel and restaurant receive several awards for eco-friendliness.
- 2005: 75th anniversary of hotel.
- 2008: Grand opening of new Spiegelsaal Room including three functional rooms.
- 2009: Ongoing room renovations. The hotel now has over 200 rooms with 400 beds.
- 2010: Friedrich Wilhelm Loew dies at the age of 81.
- 2011: Business goes to his four children and continues as family-owned private hotel in third generation. Son, Peter Loew, becomes General Manager.
- 2012: The Hotel ranked No. 1 as the best conference Hotel of the Ringhotel Cooperation
- 2013: Certification with the GastroManagementPass (GMP)
- 2014 The hotel receives the "Servicequalität Deutschland" - Certification Level 1
- 2015 The kitchen area is fully modernized and extended generous
- 2015 The Restaurant area "Pachelbel & Co." welcomes our guests with a new look
- 2016 The Ringhotel Loew`s Merkur modernizes another 15 rooms.
- 2017 The new fitness area Mercurialis-Gym is opened.
- 2017 A further 7 hotel rooms will be modernized. Within the last 3 years (2014-2017) a total of 36 hotel rooms have been renovated and modernized.
